Why become a SEN tutor?

In a blog last month, we revealed that the demand for high quality SEN tutors has been rising for a number of years. In the face of pandemic-induced learning loss, tutoring has proven itself to be one of the best solutions for addressing gaps in education and the Government responded by providing 300,000 courses in Autumn term of 2022, for example.

The SEN sector is no different to mainstream education – tutors are a vital industry resource. Alongside teachers and other specialists, they provide the extra support required to help young people with special needs and disabilities to thrive. In many cases, an extra boost of learning delivered one-on-one can help transform a child’s attitude towards education.

But what’s in it for you? Here, we share our top 3 reasons to consider becoming a SEN tutor.

1. It’s flexible

People prioritise work-life balance more than ever and one of the major benefits of becoming a tutor is flexibility. Tutors are usually self-employed which means that unlike a standard nine-to-five job, you can be your own boss, choosing whether to be a full-time or part-time tutor and even scale work commitments up and down depending on your availability.

Tutors can schedule sessions around their own lifestyle – whether that’s another job, children or hobbies. They can choose their own hours and may even have some say on where they work – whether in a school setting, student’s home or even via video conferencing.

2. It’s rewarding

Tutoring – particularly for SEN students – is extremely rewarding. Tutors deliver an educational experience that can’t be accessed in a classroom setting and can make a major difference to each child’s life.

A tutor’s influence can have a real impact, helping a SEN child to gain more understanding in a particular subject area or teaching them something new, it’s about making the learning process as enjoyable as possible. Through a tutor’s support, SEN students can start to build their confidence and apply what they’re learning outside of the lessons – offering a real sense of gratification and pride.

3. It pays well

Tutoring is a great way to increase your income. It might be that you’re already working as a teacher and want to earn some extra money, a university student looking to tutor alongside your studies, or even a retiree looking to get back into work.

Data from Senploy reveals that since 2020, the average rate of pay is on the up. Three years ago, the average pay rate for a tutor position was £20-£30 per hour. This increased to £20-£45 per hour in 2022, with one of our adverts reaching over £50 per hour for a Dyslexia Specialist Tutor in London.
