Are the Christmas holidays a good time to search for a new job in special education?

There are both advantages and disadvantages to starting your job search during December.

Data from Senploy shows that December 2022 suffered a 13% decrease in the number of job vacancies posted compared to the number uploaded the month previously (November 2022). A swift recovery in January 2023 benefitted from a 34% increase in job availability compared to December 2022.

Whilst January is notoriously busy for job opportunities, the data is not enough to suggest December is a complete write off. In fact, application rates during the Christmas period would indicate that December is in fact a busy month for people starting their job search.

So, whilst the festivities are underway, get job hunting!

There are three main advantages to starting a job search during the Christmas period as follows:

1. Reduced competition: Many job seekers may pause their job search during the Christmas holidays, thinking that employers aren't actively hiring. This can result in fewer applicants for available positions, potentially giving you an edge.

2. Networking opportunities: The festive season often brings various gatherings and events where you can network with professionals in your field. This can lead to job leads or introductions to potential employers.

3. Time for reflection: Having time off during the holidays might provide you with an opportunity to reflect on your career goals and preferences, which can help you make more informed decisions about your job search. Could this be the time you realise a career in special education is what you have been waiting for?

On the flip side, there are also disadvantages to starting your job search in December, and these can be summarised as:

1. Less job postings: The data does suggest that some education recruiters, schools and trusts may hold off posting job vacancies during the Christmas period, so the number of available positions could be more limited.

2. Delays in the hiring process: The hiring process might slow down during the holidays due to staff members taking time off. This could result in longer wait times for interviews and job offers.

3. Uncertainty: Not all employers are actively recruiting during December, and the timing of when positions become available can vary. There may be more certainty in the job market during other times of the year.

Ultimately, the decision to search for a job in special education during December and over Christmas depends on your personal circumstances and preferences. If you're actively looking for a job, it's worth exploring opportunities, networking, and monitoring job boards during this time. However, be prepared for potential delays in the hiring process and consider continuing your search into the new year if needed.
