Job description

SEND Specialist Tutor - 1:1 Plymouth

We need a dedicated and experienced SEND Specialist Tutors to provide bespoke 1:1 tuition packages for young people with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) who are currently unable to access mainstream education.

Opportunity

We are looking for compassionate and inspiring tutors to support children and young people with SEND. Many of the pupils we work with have become disengaged from learning due to anxiety, unmet needs, or challenges within the school environment.

As a SEND Specialist Tutor, you will design and deliver tailored lessons to bridge educational gaps, boost confidence, and support attainment. Whether you are an experienced tutor, teacher, or have a background working with children therapeutically, your goal will be to re-engage learners, provide structure to their daily routine, and help them progress towards reintegration into mainstream or specialist education.

This role typically involves part-time work during school hours, with tuition replacing traditional schooling. We will support you in tracking and reporting pupil progress through weekly updates.

Role:

  • Location: Various locations across Plymouth
  • Position: SEND Specialist Tutor
  • Type of Work: Contract
  • Start Date: Immediate
  • Duration: Until the pupil is ready to reintegrate into school
  • Contract Type: Temporary
  • Hours: Minimum of 10 hours per week, per student (flexible hours depending on family needs)
  • Pay: £27 per hour (negotiable)

Requirements:

  • Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) or equivalent
  • UK classroom teaching experience
  • PECS/Makaton training (preferred but not essential)
  • Creativity, patience, and a proactive approach to teaching
  • Experience supporting pupils with challenging behaviour and disengagement

Eligibility:

  • The right to work in the UK
  • An enhanced child barred list DBS certificate (registered with the online update service or willing to process a new application)
  • Two professional child-related references
