Are you passionate about supporting young people who may struggle to engage with education?
We are currently recruiting for a Behavioural Support Worker to join a mainstream college in Merseyside, supporting students who may present with Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs, challenging behaviour, low engagement or difficulties maintaining focus.
This is an ideal opportunity for an experienced Behaviour Support Worker, SEN Teaching Assistant, Learning Support Assistant, Youth Worker, Mentor or Education Support Worker who understands the importance of building positive relationships and helping young people overcome barriers to learning.
The successful candidate will play an important role in keeping students focused, engaged and on task, identifying when a student is becoming disengaged or dysregulated and using appropriate strategies to prevent situations from escalating.
The Role
As a Behavioural Support Worker, you will:
- Provide targeted support to students who are disengaged, at risk of falling behind or struggling to access their education.
- Work closely with students to keep them focused, motivated and on task.
- Build positive, trusting relationships with students and act as a consistent source of support.
- Identify early signs of frustration, anxiety, disengagement or escalating behaviour.
- Use effective de-escalation and behaviour management strategies to calm situations before they develop further.
- Support students to regulate their emotions and return to learning.
- Encourage students to make positive choices and take responsibility for their behaviour.
- Provide 1:1 support where required, both within and outside the classroom.
- Work closely with teaching staff and the wider college support team.
- Help students develop strategies to manage difficult situations and remain engaged with their studies.
- Encourage students to develop confidence, resilience, independence and self-regulation.
- Support students to overcome barriers that may prevent them from succeeding academically.
- Maintain accurate records and provide feedback regarding student progress, behaviour and engagement.
The Ideal Candidate
We are looking for someone who is calm, resilient, patient and confident when managing challenging situations.
The successful candidate may have experience as a:
- Behaviour Support Worker
- Behavioural Teaching Assistant
- SEN Teaching Assistant
- Learning Support Assistant
- Youth Worker
- Mentor
- Pastoral Support Worker
- Education Support Worker
- Residential Support Worker
- SEMH Teaching Assistant
Experience supporting young people with SEMH, challenging behaviour, anxiety, low confidence, disengagement or difficulties regulating their emotions would be highly desirable.
You will need to be confident setting appropriate boundaries while maintaining a positive, supportive and non-confrontational approach.
