Complex Needs Teaching Assistant

Job description

We have the perfect opportunity for a complex needs support mentor to work in an outstanding special school in Lambeth for young people aged between 5 to17, with social, emotional and mental health needs and have suffered from adverse childhood experiences. A large proportion of pupils have additional special educational needs, including attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), oppositional defiant disorder (ODD), conduct disorder (CD) and autistic spectrum disorder (ASD).

The school are meticulous in their approach to understanding the full scale of the needs of each pupil, whilst providing a safe and stimulating environment. For this role, you will be working alongside external therapists and psychologists.

To be successful in this role, you will need to have perseverance, confidence and determination as you may need to handle challenging situations strongly, therefore you will need to be prepared. You will need to be flexible, have plenty of enthusiasm, motivation, good communication skills and the ability to work 1:1 or with small groups on specific programmes if required.


• Managing pupils' behaviour.
• Ensuring students engage with lessons, providing academic support and working under the instruction of the class teacher.
• Helping the students with their life skills.

For this role, you will have:

• Experience working in a specialist schools such as SEN schools, Pupil Referral Units or in Youth Work.
• Previous support work within a school or other child related experience.
• Strong behaviour management and confident with challenging behaviour.
• Happy to work one to one and small group work.
• An enthusiastic and friendly, yet firm approach.

All pay rates quoted will be inclusive of 12.07% statutory holiday pay. This advert is for a temporary position. In some cases, the option to make this role permanent may become available at a later date.
