As a Special Educational Needs Coordinator (SENCo), you will be a vital part of a school's Special Educational Needs Team (SENT) and ensure that exceptional children, young people and adults receive appropriate support in mainstream schools.

SENCos ensure that Special Educational Needs (SEN) provision is available for children and young people within mainstream schools. SEN provision may range from a simple first aid treatment all the way through to the support of complex conditions such as Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD). SENCos deliver SEN provision on behalf of Local Authorities, Special Schools and other agencies such as Social Services.

Responsibilities of a SENCo include:

  • -Liaising with children, young people, parents, guardians and teachers to discuss the types of special needs that they are working with.
  • -Working with parents or carers and other professionals to make sure that the needs of a child are met.
  • -Supporting mainstream schools in meeting the specific special needs of their pupils.

Progressing your SEN career into a SENCo

You will need to be an experienced Special Education teacher or have a relevant qualification and postgraduate Special Educational Needs diploma, for example the QTS-qualified practitioner Special Educational Needs (SEN) diploma at Level 7. In 2022, you will be required to have a minimum of two years' experience working with SEN children or young people in schools.

The SENCo role is becoming ever more important as increasing numbers of pupils are recognised as having Special Educational Needs. The number of SENCos has varied nationally; however there appears to be a growing trend towards increased SEN provision within mainstream schools, thus giving rise to an increasing demand for qualified SEN teachers and so ultimately a greater need for qualified SENCos.
