We touched on the rise in unemployment during the COVID-19 crisis in last week's blog on the top 5 reasons to work in Special Education, and subsequently how job security has become critical to most. A Bloomberg survey showed that more than half of workers around the world were concerned about losing their jobs. The Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development is an intergovernmental economic organisation with 37 member countries, founded in 1961 to stimulate economic progress and world trade. They have charted unemployment data and thus shown how activity within employment is in major decline and that this will remain so throughout 2021.

There is evidence that many have indeed changed careers in order to try and achieve greater security as well as job satisfaction. Total jobs reported that 70% of people are more likely to consider working in a different sector. Angelique Ruzicka writing for thisismoney.co.uk, lists teaching and tutoring as number one on their list of ‘pandemic proof careers'. The second being medical and Social Care.

Special education is considered essential and hiring throughout the pandemic has increased

Taking the above into consideration, it's no surprise that Special Education is of paramount importance and seeing even greater increased demand. Amy Allen, founder and Director of Senploy, quoted recently that “there is constant demand but limited supply of experience”. Georgina Bailey reports in The Houses of Parliament on line magazine, The House, that there are insufficient specialist staff to deal with the current mental health crisis amongst children. Children with special education needs is on the increase with currently over a quarter of a million children in need of special education. In addition to this we know that children's mental health is suffering.

Job satisfaction among Special Education Teachers is amongst the highest

Job satisfaction is defined as the extent to which an employee feels self-motivated, content & satisfied with his/her job. Job satisfaction happens when an employee feels he or she is having job stability, career growth and a comfortable work-life balance, an important factor for both the employee and the employer. We, at Senploy, of course have plenty of anecdotal evidence from the talented teachers that we navigate towards jobs within the special education sector, and how they love what they do. The American Journal of Special Education in 2018 completed a study which illustrates job satisfaction within the SEN sector. Randstad, a leader in global HR services, suggested in December 2020 that candidates rated job security unsurprisingly, as one of the highest on their list of attributes when looking for a new position.

Locked-in salaries with high employee retention rates

There are a number of things which come with a secure role. The first being the most obvious of a locked-in salary or protection of income. In addition, employee benefits like pension contributions, health care packages and training. Job security is about longevity and training provides the ability to learn and grow with a role. With all of this comes high job retention rates. This bodes well from a cost point of view, in that new employment costs a business time and money as well as benefits in terms of continuity.

A job sector open to all age groups

It could be argued that the unemployment crisis is particularly concerning amongst the younger population. The Nuffield Foundation agreeing with this sentiment, having supported the Resolution Foundation out of concern for the 800 000 18-24 years olds expected to leave education within 2020 with little prospect on the horizon. It's fair to say however, the pandemic has hit all ages, as expressed earlier, we understand many have looked at retraining in search for job security. Teaching within the Special education sector is a career choice open to all age groups who are keen to work with children.

Here at Senploy we are making the future of Special Education Needs & Disabilities happen. Hundreds of jobs within the special education sector are added each week with roles ranging from all areas across the UK. What are you waiting for? Apply today and start making a difference in SEN!
